Austin – Today Texas Secretary of State Nandita Berry announced that a proposed amendment to the Texas Constitution related to transportation will appear on the November 4 ballot as Proposition 1. The announcement follows Governor Rick Perry’s proclamation that the constitutional amendment will appear on the November 4 ballot, as specified by the Legislature.

Proposition 1, as it is worded on the ballot, provides for the use and dedication of certain money transferred to the state highway fund to assist in the completion of transportation construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects, not to include toll roads. The enabling legislation for the constitutional amendment (SJR 1) was approved during the 83rd Legislature, third called session.

“I want to ensure that Texas voters are prepared and aware of what will be on the ballot this November,” Secretary Berry said. “Constitutional amendments are not usually on even-year ballots, but this election is an exception.”

The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 4 statewide election is Oct. 6. Early voting begins on Monday, Oct. 20, and runs through Friday, Oct. 31.

Secretary Berry also encouraged Texans to check now to make sure they have the required photo ID if they plan to vote in person.

To cast a ballot in person, registered voters need to present one of the following approved forms of photo ID:

  • Texas Driver License – issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Personal Identification Card – issued by DPS
  • Texas Concealed Handgun License – issued by DPS
  • United States Military Identification card containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Passport – issued by the U.S. government
  • EIC – issued free by DPS
